Former “Charlie’s Angel” Lucy Liu is apparently ready for more detective work. She’s signed on to star as Watson in CBS’ modern take on Sherlock Holmes,“Elementary.”
Jonny Lee Miller is playing the titular role in the show that transplants Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master sleuth from 19th century London to post-millennial Manhattan.
According to Deadline, the “Ally McBeal” alumna will play Joan Watson — a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died. To make ends meet, she apparently takes in Holmes, who is fresh out of rehab and in need of a sober companion.Again, conflicted. Genderswap is kind of interesting, but now I’m wondering if they just did this to avoid the inevitable slashing and gay jokes…
I do like Lucy Liu though…
Yeah to me it just screams “TRYING TO CASH IN ON ROMANCE BUT AVOID THE GAY”
But I could be wrong - genderbending is interesting but they should have done both or none to me
Yeah, that is my primary concern.
I do think it’s fantastic that they cast a woman of colour in this role, but I really do suspect they did this primarily so they could work in romantic subplots for sweeps week and shit.
Maybe they’d do fem!Lestrade or fem!Moriarty and I could ship Joan Watson with either of them.
Fem!Sherlock and Fem!Watson would have been interesting, I think. A woman who takes care of her annoying male roommate, nags him to eat something, brings him tea, gets his phone out of his jacket for him while he’s still wearing it (haha!), tags along on his hobbies, and can’t stop talking about how awesome he is could get…a little…yeah.
I…I feel strangely irrational about this. I’m not a fan of Lucy Liu, first. Second, well, there’s a reason everyone thinks John and Sherlock are together, and that’s partly the relationship between them. It’s a delicate balance to strike for John’s character to be female, and the potential exists for her character to be perceived as either completely run over by a very strong-willed Sherlock, or for her to descend into the ugliness that is The Nag.
Good luck to them, but that’s a really fine line they’re trying to walk.
