Right, let’s do this thing then…

As mentioned a couple of days ago I would love to do an illustrated fairy tale collection. In the absence of publishers beating down my door begging me to do it I’m going to do something off my own back, partially as self-promotion and partially because I bloody well want to.

So want I need now is for writers (probably comic writers, but mostly because most of the writers I know write comics rather than because of anything else) to write me stories to do some illustrations for. What I would like is:

• All ages stories, although that doesn’t mean they have to be written for tiny children. Darker themes are fine, but overt sex and violence isn’t what I want. We are dealing with fairy tales though so sex and violence is always going to be the subtext…
• Pretty much any length, although I am planning (at least initially) on publishing just on-line so very long stories might not work so well. I do need enough story to be able to do one illustration for it though.
• By ‘fairy tale’ I mean traditional stories retold by a new author, traditional tales re-interpreted or re-imagined, folk tales, myths and legends or something completely new that uses the same kind of themes and tropes. Pretty much everyone ‘knows’ what a fairy tale is, but what each person ‘knows’ is probably different from the next person. If you can justify it being a fairy story even if it’s set on a space station peopled by alien frogs then that’s fine by me.
• I’m not going to set myself a target for how often I’ll put something up or how many illustrations I’ll do. It all depends on how many stories I get sent, how busy i am with other stuff and how many illustrations each story inspires. 
• I want full, text stories, not comic scripts or plot synopsiseseseses. Like I say though, length is not so much of an issue.
• If you’re not a writer but think there is someone you’l particularly like to see write me a story… mention it to them. They may or may not say yes, but you’ll never know if you never bring it to their attention.
• I’m not promising to do illustrations for everything that gets sent to me, or to do things in the order they are sent to me, but I will try to do as many as I can.

At the moment the plan is just to publish on-line in a non-profit making capacity. I am not going to be laying claim to any of the stories, all text will remain the property of the authors. Any stories that you want to send me must be original works. I am ideally wanting to get stories from professional/semi-professional writers but if you’ve got something that you think is great send it to me anyway.
